Does anyone -really- like writing these things?
I was born in 1977, a Virgo and, for those who care about such things, a Fire Snake. I started drawing as soon as I figured out certain items will make a mark on certain surfaces, but my first works were tragically demolished by my mother and a lot of Mr. Clean and fresh paint. For the fantasy art though, you can blame her - I was raiding her library of books from DAW, Tor, Baen and anything I could get my hands on with a unicorn or dragon on the cover by the time I was six. My uncle is responsible for the roleplaying, getting me started on Dungeons and Dragons about as soon as I could write up a legible character sheet. Between the two of them overseeing my childhood, I don't think there was any other way I could have gone!
I did try though, being told that there are no jobs for artists and encouraged to go into more "productive" fields - I studied computer programming, law and security and LAN design for very brief periods of time, always going back to art. Now that I've accepted my fate as a "starving artist", I'm much happier.
I studied Art Fundamentals and Illustration at Sheridan College for a few years, and attended classes at the Ottawa School of Art as well as summer classes offered at Sheridan. In 2004 I had a fabulous time at a week-long seminar conducted by Larry Elmore at the beautiful Doe Run Inn in KY, USA. Since that time I have been focusing on oils, and hope to someday live up to his teaching. |
